Books by JoAnn Stevelos

Dream Alibis is a collection of poems, along with a play called “Little Red Wagon”. Ryder Cooley’s intriguing illustrations bring a deep sense of meaning to the Dream Alibis poems, an assemblage of fragmented narratives about finding hope in the aftermath of estrangement, lost love, loneliness, and emotional abuse. The poems segue into “Little Red Wagon”, a play about a family that creates a temporal divide between a political activist’s suicide and the present. It explores the layers of grief that tether the family to one another in conspiratorial silence. Dream Alibis was written & published by JoAnn Stevelos, with illustrations by Ryder Cooley, photography by Noah Fowler, and book design by Mika Dmytrowska.

Compelling and touching--JoAnn Stevelos's, Howard Be Thy Name is a novel told with tenderness and even-handed compassion but expands into a fully realized portrait of the complexities of heartbreak, estrangement, secret lives, and abuse. Set in Albany, in 1968, we follow the story of Evie Edwards, divorced, and a mother of four children, who falls in love with Howard Russo, a newly ordained Catholic priest. Unyielding to the consequences their relationship will have on her children, Evie throws herself and her children into a life of secrecy, lies, and betrayals. The story begins with Evie confronting a heartbreaking revelation that forces her to decide between her children and Howard.
